SUBMIT ANYMORE ENTRIES :)
Three years ago today, our humble little blog opened its doors for the very first time! Back then, we were little more than a skeleton of our current incarnation – with an uber bare theme, minimal graphics and little to no colour. Despite its crude origins, SARAH-JANE.tv had one goal in mind from its inception: to be a website dedicated entirely to The Sarah Jane Adventures!
So to celebrate three years of dedicated reporting as well as our commitment to you, the fans, we're excited to announce the launch of an EPIC new contest!
Open to anyone around the world and designed to take into account every creative corner of the SJA fandom, we'd like our readers to come up with a piece of fan art, fan fiction or fan video that best reflects the following theme:
'A day in the life of the SJA gang'
+ THE RULES +
Our theme gives you a wide discretion to do as you please, but we do ask that entrants adhere to the following fundamental rules:
- Your entry needs to include the entire gang, not just a member or two.
- You'll need to depict an average day in their lives, which means your entry will need to have danger, humour, baddies, aliens or sci-fi elements that are likely to engage the target audience of the show.
- You can create your own villains or secondary characters.
- You'll need to tie the elements of your entry together to make it mesh.
- Entries need to be appropriate for a PG audience.
- Everything needs to be original and made for the contest. Fan artists, this means you can't take screenshots from the show itself and photoshop that into an entry. Fan fiction writers, you can't regurgitate old plots unless it's sufficiently different to the show. Fan video makers are exempt from this rule, as they'd have nothing to work with, otherwise(!)
- Fan videos must feature live action scenes, not slideshows and text, and be backed by an appropriately themed song.
- All entries will remain anonymous, and will be hosted by SARAH-JANE.tv. Don't upload your entries on sites under a recognisable name, or label your work with your identity; otherwise you may risk disqualification. Email your entries to me, instead.
- Entries will have the following size limitations placed on them:
- Fan Art – 3MB or less, under 1500 pixels in width.
- Fan Vid – 50MB or less, under 6 minutes.
- Fan Fic – 3,500 words or less.
+ THE PRIZES +
A contest wouldn't be a contest unless you got something out of it, so we have some truly rare, interstellar goodies up for grabs!

If you wish to enter, attach your submission to an email and send it in to contest@sjadventures.co.uk. Deadline for entries is midnight on September 8th, 2009 i.e. three weeks from today. I'll reply to every email to confirm receipt. You can also send any queries to the same addy.
Following the deadline, all entries will be critiqued upon by a panel of judges - including myself. We have no say whatsoever on who wins, but we will be offering our thoughts to the people who do...YOUR PEERS! My aim's to have a reliable voting system up a week after the submission deadline and I'll announce the winners a fortnight after that on the day the third series premieres. Those who emerge as the top three favourites get the prizes! Simple-ski? Oh yus. Good luck, all! Give it yer best effort, and may the best fan win!

Happy birthday Sarah Jane TV! Three years online is an amazing achievement Nabu! Congratulations. The competition is a brilliant idea and the prizes are amazing! Your artistic talent and imagination, like some of the artwork here :)

And thank you, Brad! Much appreciated =3
have just sent my video off.
I have done a video two but couldnt find many more clips of rani and the rest. so have just done one up to when maria leaves
After the DWO Post Nabusan, I may write a FanFic.
Sadly, the S2 boxset isn't released yet so my video entry might not have that much Series 2 stuff but oh well. Can't wait!
When you say an average day in their lives, does like fan cinema trailers count to represent it?
That'd be fine :) An average day is basically a metaphorical day, representing their everyday adventures. And no worries on choosing between Series 1 or 2 or both :) Thanks for your participation!
Happt Birthday SJtv! I'm doing a fanfic but it's not a typical adventure; a little out of the ordinary!
So we're not getting judged by the judges? Couldn't people cheat by getting their friends to vote for them?
And how on earth (or not on earth) did you get your hands on a BOTTLE OF BUBBLE SHOCK?!? And signed script pages?
Does the bottle have actual bubble shock in it?
:D
It does indeed, though...it expired back in April '07 so it may not be entirely safe to drink :P
All acquired through sheer luck. ^_^
And in contests like these, there's always a risk with cheating. Rest assured, I've taken all the necessary precautions.
Good luck with the fic, I LOVE out of the ordinary :)
Who'll be voting then ?
erm, us - obviously?
but ppl will just cheat ... how will it work ? do they vote here or have to send a email ??
'reliable voting system'
How Many People are entering this ?
Any specific text size for the fanfic? And sometimes microsoft word doesn't work because when I tried putting documents onto a memory stick then taking them into school I couldn't use them because that pc didn't have word 2008. So if it doesn't work could I just copy and paste it into the email?
Thanks.
I suppose if you're sending a confirmation email then you could say if it works or not. Thanks! :D
I could indeedy, I accept .doc, .rtf and .txt - or even, as you say, an email. Size 12, Times New Roman is the default. I'll reformat it on your bebalf anyway, so no worries. :)
I'm hoping to enter this at some point, I'm assuming the fan fic entries have to be SJA friendly?
The thought of the voting system puts me off... It'll obviously be hijacked by people who see their entry and get all their mates to vote. I don't have an entire myspace's worth of people who'll vote for me so i'll obviously not win... which makes entering a bit.. moot?
I would much prefer an internal selection of say the top three and then let the public decide who wins. That way the risk of the top three purely being those with whom have the most "friends" voting for it rather than voting FOR it is likely to be slightly nullified.
Allllsooooo, not to be picky, but Linux users may not have 'Times New Roman' installed (it's a 'copyrighted' font for which Microsoft pay a fee to ship with) and if they're using OpenOffice they may not remember to save as a .doc (Microsoft propriety format) as it's not default. Perhaps you should be willing to accept .odt format in the interest of fairness? AFAIK Microsoft Word can open these if you use a free plugin. Or you can download and install the free openoffice suite which opens/save to .doc AND can read pretty much every other format gooooing.
If you mean getting Torchwood or Doctor Who elements into your fic, I won't see any need to reject that, David. Though if you want to get ahead of the competition, a clear focus on SJA may bode well with the voting majority.
And I use OpenOffice, Joey, I'm hip and down with the Opensource shizzle. The guideline file formats/font are there to make my life easier, they aren't a hard-line requirement.
You raise some valid issues with regard to the voting system. Problem is, what if we get dozens of amazing entries - and I simply have to pick the top 3. It may work on Blue Peter, but a fan run contest like this is here to give every fan a fair chance, even you.
Don't worry, I'm not a total n00b at this, I have ample measures in place to spot anything dodgy. I'm even considering penalties as a deterrence. Though we'll see how it goes. Hope that alleviates some of your concerns.
I was going to use a bit from torchwood children of earth without realising it but I just did today, would it still be ok to use? I can't really say what it is because all the voting's supposed to be anonymous and everything.
But would it be ok?
:S
For my fanfic, I've started making pictures made at the top of pages, and saving the pages with the pictures/words on as PNGS. is that ok?
Ooh, I've had an email concerning pictures included in fanfics. Unfortunately, I can't accept them :( I'll accept your fics, of course - but the images will be removed. Really really sorry.
Needs to be as close to an even playing field as possible for fanfics, images would give you an unfair advantage over the other writers. And the only thing that should be giving you an edge should be your words. Plus there's the whole 'only one category' thing.
On a sidenote...though I can't accept fanfics with pictures, I CAN accept fanart with text. As a comic or small caption.
And Sarah, I won't reject any crossover ideas. As long as it sticks to the rules...namely:
* Everything needs to be original and made for the contest...Fan fiction writers, you can't regurgitate old plots unless it's sufficiently different to the show.
Ok.
I've got a question about 4 comments above? I seriously need to know the answer because otherwise I won't be able to finish my story and I've only got halfway through and I've got writer's block ahhh!!!!! :S
I posted my name as Sarah btw not sarahjaneadventuresnews like usual.
Thanks!
If you're referencing the events of Children of Earth in passing, it should be fine. If the events of CoE are done from an SJA perspective and it's central to your story, you may have to revise your story. If you're doing a sequel, where the aliens from CoE come back and SJA have to deal with them in a new story - that's totally fine. Of course in discussing this, I have now potentially given away your anonymity.
Please email me if you have specific queries. Vague stuff is fine here, but if you're going to start discussing plot points you may risk disqualification. xx
Are you allowed to have more than one entry? I know the answer is probably no but I just thought I'd ask as Big Finish ran a video competition recently and you could enter as many times as you liked...
Sadly one entry only, yes :) Sorry I didn't mention that in the original post, thought it would be one of those taken for granted rules. You can, however, replace an entry you've already submitted with a better one up until the closing date - incase you want to correct mistakes or scrap your original submission altogether.
OK
Hey I just got an idea. Why not send the winner's story (or the 3 winners story) to Russell T Davies ? It could make an episode of Sarah Jane Adventures !
I found his address:
Mr Russell T Davies
c/o BBC Wales
Broadcasting House
Llantrisant Road
Cardiff, Wales
CF5 2YQ
United Kingdom
That's an idea. It's up to you Nabu San ;)
bye
I certainly wouldn't mind doing that, Estelle. It's a great idea! I'd love to show off what the SJA fandom can come up with to RTD.
But they'll never in a million years use the winning entries as the basis of an episode. They just can't legally, sadly. Hopefully it'll inspire him to come up with equally epic stories, though!
Wow, Naby, sincere congrats to you on managing to keep up with this comments page ;)
I think everyone who enters should get something like a certificate or an SJA photo, because making a video/ fan art/ short story is hard work and no-one would want to do that for nothing! Well, I wouldn't want to. ;D
Will it be ok to post my video AFTER the compettitions finished onto my youtube?
That's totally fine, Anonymous :)
Voting system worries me but all true SJA fans will vote for the best piece. Because there will be a natural gem that deserves to win and hopefully it will prevail without getting mates to vote
Good luck everyone :D
Can I ask where the voting system will be up ??
Come on come on come ON people! Let's get this thing up and running! Please?
I'm stuck here in Tegan's Brisbane and there isn't a single thing to do and ethics are the only thing stopping me from watching the entire of Series 2 which I haven't seen yet, pirated on Youtube!!!!
...please???
Love,
Ella
