Return of the Sontarans

After spending too many years in the wilderness of Doctor Who exile, the Sontarans are returning to Doctor Who! Oh yes, because today the BBC have confirmed that the aliens will be making an appearence in Doctor Who's fourth season, alonside David Tennant's Tenth Doctor.

The aliens made their debut alongside Sarah Jane Smith in the 1973 adventure "The Time Warrior", when the warrior Linx crashed landed in the middle ages and came up with a scheme to conquer the human race and use them all as Sontaran slaves. The species returned for 1975's "The Sontaran Experiment", again alongside Sarah Jane Smith.

Other appearences include 1978's "Invasion of Time" (with John Leeson voicing K9), the 21st anniversary story "The Two Doctors" and the Jimmy Saville semi-spoof "In a Fix with Sontarans". The monsters have also appeared in the spin-off video "Shakedown". Correct me if I'm wrong, but they're the only 'major' villian who haven't, as of yet, appeared in a Big Finish audio play.

The Sontaran race was mentioned fleetingly by Bea in "Eye of the Gorgon - Part One". Quite what significance this mention has has yet to be seen, but there are some rumours in fan corners that the Sontarans could eventually pop up in The Sarah Jane Adventures. It could happen...

Big question is; will it?

Yeaah - The Return of the Sontarans at last. One of my favourite monsters and it's about time they returned. I'd love to see SJ with them again too.
