Just when thought everything had gone quiet on the news front, the latest SFX Magazine special is released in stores - and features ample features relating to "The Sarah Jane Adventures". 'Ya see, this is no mere special - it's a Doctor Who special, dedicated to all things NuWho (and OldWho, too, come to think of it!)
There's a revealing interview with Sarah Jane herself, Elisabeth Sladen! The actress decides that she probably did her best acting work whilst beside Jon Pertwee's Doctor - not Tom Baker's, like everybody would have guessed. She also tells of her discomfort filming "K9 & Company", and the warmth she felt returning to Doctor Who in "School Reunion". Oh, and from now on, Sarah is most definately a northern lass!
The magazine also prints a 'lost' interview with Jon Pertwee, conducted in 1986 - long before his death. Apparently producer Peter Bryant had cast Pertwee in the role as he expected/wanted a very whimsy, musical Third Doctor - but Pertwee wasn't having any of it! He also reveals that Katy Manning (Jo Grant, the Third Doctor's second companion) was brought up by Judy Garland and Liza Minnelli!
Barry Letts and Terrance Dicks (the creative team who originally hired Sladen for the role of Sarah) also discuss their time on the show, as well as the new adventures on telly today.
If that wasn't enough there's a full episode guide (with reviews) of the complete first series of "The Sarah Jane Adventures" - from 'Invasion of the Bane' through to 'The Lost Boy'. It's a very positive, fan-pleasing tour guide of the series.
On top of all that, there's a poll of SFX reader's top 25 companions - and Sarah Jane Smith comes in at number... wait for it... 1!! Yep, that's right. She's not just my fave, or even yours - but the vast majority of SFX's readership, too! (She won by a *vast* majority, according to the writer who compiled the results)
SFX Collection 33: Doctor Who special is on sale now, priced £5.99 - and includes a free book, "Made of Steel" featuring the Tenth Doctor and Martha Jones.
