Have Your Own Sonic Lipstick!

I've just learnt that the BBC have sold Character Options the rights to produce and sell a range of Sarah Jane Adventure toys.

A press release reveals: "NEWS BRIEF: BBC Worldwide has added four new UK apparel licensees to its Charlie and Lola portfolio, while awarding the master toy licence for Russell T Davies' The Sarah Jane Adventures to Character Options. The Charlie and Lola licensees are Silver-nit, Cooneen, William Lamb and Clifton Bay. New ranges will roll out in autumn/winter 2007. The toy range from Doctor Who spin-off The Sarah Jane Adventures will include action figures, play sets and 'sonic lipstick.'"

It's great news then for anybody who's ever wanted to own a Sarah Jane action figure - or her fantastic 'sonic lipstick' for that matter...

When photos of the new toys become available you can be sure SJ.tv will be the first to report upon it!

Another New Face?

There's been a number of rumours that writer/producer Vaughan Sivell is set to write a two part adventurer for "The Sarah Jane Adventures".

The rumour started after imdb.com listed his name amongst the SJA writing crew - and now it appears as though the man's own CV (click here) confirms his involvement in the show.

So far there's been no official confirmation of this news - so stay tuned for an update.

Cartoon Antics

The CBBC series, "Totally Doctor Who" returns later in the year (around Easter time) and we've learnt today that each new edition will feature a 3 and a half minute cartoon version of Doctor Who, staring David Tennant and Freema Agyeman.

Although it doesn't have any real relevence on "The Sarah jane Adventures" it does prove one thing; that the BBC are willing to push their Doctor Who/CBBC connection as far as they can.

For SJA this can be only good news - proving how dedicated BBC Wales are in giving children the best possible service, and entertainment.

Man, every day I get more and more excited...

We Beat Torchwood!

Thanks to "Marcus" over at OutpostGallifrey we now have final ratings for "Invasion of the Bane" - the New Year's day episode of "The Sarah Jane Adventures".

"The final ratings for "The Sarah Jane Adventures" has been confirmed as 2.92 million viewers, which was 15% of the television audience.

Of that audience 44% was male and 56% female.

16% of the total was under 16, giving a children's audience of 465,000 which was 19% of children watching.Of the children 51% were boys and 49% girls. 25% were between 4 and 6, 39% between 7 and 9, 23% between 10 and 12 and 14% between 13 and 15.

Final figures are much more accurate than the initial overnights and include viewers who recorded the programme and watched it within seven days."

Which means one thing - we beat Torchwood's ratings! We're now the most successful spin-off from New Who! It's just such a shame that we're still overshadowed by "K9 And Company". How the hell that show managed 8 million is anybody's guess...

Cover Girl

Just a quick reminder that this week's Radio Times contains a photograph of Elisabeth Sladen (along with her three 'executives' - Phil, Russell and Julie) accepting an 'award' for appearing on one of 2006's Radio Times front covers.

The cover in question was for the return of Doctor Who (season two) last April, where Elisabeth appeared alongside David Tennant and Billie Piper to promote her appearence in "School Reunion". I would congratulate Elisabeth on her win; but I'll restrain this once. After all, it wasn't like she did anything except smile at a camera and looked scared!

My fingers are crossed that this year we'll see a neat SJA cover - but chances of that are slim to none (despite the Radio Times' love of all things 'Who).

Bet You Didn't Know...

A few weeks ago I promised to share some cool nuggets of information I found in this month's Doctor Who Magazine. Well, after numerous delays, you can find the information below in all its uber-cool goodness...

So, for instance, did you know:

+ Elisabeth Sladen hates texting... unlike her 21-year old daughter, Sadie. "I hear you're stalking my mummy again." Sadie texts DWM, "Tsk tsk!"

+ The writers of the special are a bit relived that they don't have to write a bigger role for Sarah's robot dog. "The trouble with k9 in a contemporary setting," says Gareth Roberts, "is that you have to keep him mostly under wraps, or you'd have endless scenes of explaining who and what he is."

+ Murray Gold's theme for The Sarah Jane Adventures contains hooks from the cello and viola line in his Doctor Who theme arrangement.

+ In an early draft, Sarah fought off Mrs Wormwood's secretary with a gas capsule that made the secretary's nose turn green. "But I didn't laugh," says Russell T Davies, "I though, 'Actually, that's too silly.'"

+ Susie Liggat's dad was a close friend of Jon Pertwee's.

+ Elisabeth hasn't driven since passing her driving test. "So I had to have a few lessons before filming," she says, "and now I bomb along. Wheeee!"

+ Colin Teague is down to direct Episodes 12 and 13 of Doctor Who Season Three, which will make him the first director to oversee episodes of Doctor Who, Torchwood, and The Sarah Jane Adventures.

+ Judging by her attic pinups, Sarah managed to take a camera with her to the future Earth of The Sontaran Experiment to take a snap of Harry Sullivan. We like to think she's got one of Robot K1 somewhere, too...

And there you go! Some nice little insider information into the development of the SJA special (fingers crossed, we'll have more on that soon). The magazine is full of splendid photographs too, and at just £3.99 is crying out for you to buy it!

The Masque of Mandragora

As promised ....

Hurrah! Other rooms in the TARDIS! And the wooden paneled console room. I always really liked this look. Sarah Jane is wearing a horrific dress .... but do have pictures of my mother in similar outfits, they were all the rage. We have some actually quite nice effects for its day here as we are drawn into the helix. And suddenly we are back in a very English looking forest, masquerading as Italy. Still, at least it isn't a quarry in Bristol. There is some very Shakespearean acting to set up the plot .. family feud, evil wizard, the usual. And after the arrival of the TARDIS, our Sarah Jane is soon wandering off causing trouble. And then a rather mysterious bolt of energy leaves the TARDIS ... ok, so its not a blow by blow account you are after, but I need to get the set up right.

Gosh, these Italians are so awfully awfully well spoken.
Sarah Jane is brought before a priest type geezer who seems to be wearing the seal of Rassilon on his chain .... my my she was much feistier than I recall. Intelligent, yes ... but I still always thought of her as a bit of a screamer ...
The sets and costumes are very detailed. Effects may not have been much cop back then, but they spared no detail on interiors.
I always remember Doctor Who as being very sci fi and a bit scary ... but watching now I am finding it a tad wordy ... I keep wanting to skip bits and get to the scraps and explosions!
So we now have Sarah Jane about to be sacrificed by pagan types while The Doctor is going to be be-headed elsewhere .. a glance at the clock reveals we are at almost 24 mins as the all familiar scream comes in telling me I can skip to part 2......

Oh goody .... a chase. And some hasty dialogue from some dodgy cockney extras (remember, this is Italy....) gives us a bit of background on Sarah Janes captors. The suspense in this ep is done very well, but there is an almost panto feel to the majority of it. I am waiting for a member of the carry on team to appear .... especially when the worshippers of demnoss start doing the hokey cokey. That all said, I recall that scenes like this gave me sleepless nights as a nipper and may a trip back down the stairs, Panda under one arm, asking if I can stay up as I was scared on my own. A quick threat of never being allowed to watch Who again if gave me nightmares would send me scurrying back to my room, eyes tight shut, diving under the blankets to safety. Because, of course, no aliens can get you under a sheet. Bedclothes are stronger than a forcefield, titanium .... anything!

The further in we go ... the more that scenes with The Doctor and Sarah Jane are brilliant. Perfectly played and pitched. The scenes with the Merlin type chap and his 'master' are so 'acted' its easy to see where countless Who parodies came from. I can almost see them in the dressing rooms now ... doing the same naff warm ups that I endured daily during three years of drama school ..... all together, breathe in ....... breathe out to ooh ....... If they chew the scenery any more, there will be none left.

what becomes very apparent, is the similarities with our latest series of Who. I can wholly believe this Doctor and DT's Doctor are the same man. The way he talks over scenarios to find a solution. The pauses and exclamations as he makes discoveries. Then in Sarah Jane we have a young lady, trendy to her own time, up for the adventure, as much part of the action as our titular hero ... not unlike a certain Rose Tyler. If you haven't been back to these stories, or are new to the Whoniverse with the last few years ... this story isn't a bad place to start.

On the whole: Slow start, I suspect these four parts would very easily be squished into one adventure in these faster paced times. But it has everything you can want from classic Who (you have to love villains who spit out lines like 'you craven gutted cur'). A guilty pleasure indeed. Go on, indulge yourself. I loved it!

Casting Call

Over at the SJ.TV forums we're receiving news that as of today children are being auditioned for "The Sarah Jane Adventures". It's not known yet if this is for a permanent role in the series, or for a more likely guess spot. More news as we get it (thanks to "Darth Vader").

It's good news for any dedicated Smithie living within Canada - tonight sees a rare repeat of "K9 and Company" - or "A Girl's Best Friend" if you insist! The pilot episode, recorded and broadcast in 1981 is broadcast on BBC Kids tonight at three different times (10PM, 2AM, and 5AM Eastern). Have fun watching the show - and watch out for Ian levine's 'memoriable' theme...

In other news, after we reported Elisabeth Sladen's appearence at the Highwayman's Ball earlier this week, Sarah Jane.TV is prood to report another Sladen fronted event - "A Day With Elisabeth Sladen" taking place this coming June in Glasgow. For more details click here. Please, if you hear of any forthcoming Lis Sladen covention appearence report about it in our new, friendly forum - and we'll make a song and a dance of it here in the main news page!

Finally, as slow news season is well and truly upon us it's time to unveil a few cool new features to the site. As of yesterday, our faithful under-16 writer Raxxie (I haven't a clue how to spell his full name - besides, time is of the essence!) has started his regular "Raxxie's Quest" column; which rather uniquely, explores classic Doctor Who through the eyes of a 21st Century child. Be there or be square!

We'v also got a cool "25 Questions" session coming up. Any readers of Torchwood.TV will know exactly what I'm talking about. For anybody else, expect the secret to be broken early February. It's almost time to get those thinking hats on ladies and gentlemen!

And last but by no means least, as SJ.TV heads towards it's 100 post mark, expect a rather cool look back on the life and times of Sarah Jane Smith - but that's all I'm saying on that for now!

Take care folks...

Sarah Jane Smith - 24/7

Folks, she did it. Brandon Tempany, aka OutpostGallifrey's "Sarah Jane Smith", has been watching all of the classic SJA Adventures over the weekend - and now that her marathon is over, Brandon wants to share her experiences with SJ.TV readers! Over to you Brandon...

You asked me to share my experience, so here it is.

3 days, 20 episodes, 2 spin off's, 1 Sarah Jane fan, and a Robot Dog!

I’m telling you now, its hard work watching that many episodes of Doctor who; it was fun though, once you get past the three episode hump you’re on your way (the three episode hump by the way means that the first three episodes are the hardest ones to watch but after that you’re fine).

It took longer than I thought it would actually. I sometimes forget that the episodes back then aren’t like they are now, you take a single four parter serial and watch it that’s a full hour gone, not like the 45 minute single episodes you have now but I was determined to watch them all and dammit I did it! Actually I fell asleep halfway through The Brain of Morbius but I didn’t cheat I went back and watched it again, and I got a bad stomach ache halfway through day one but I still persevered.

Now if you’re asking yourself why any person would want to spend 3 days watching nothing but Sarah Jane well I’ll tell you why, Sarah Jane is in my opinion the best companion on Doctor Who ever! She is cool, she’ smart, and on some occasions she’s more on the ball than the Doctor, she’s actually so great I cant find the right words to say about her, but here’s a few things I’ve noticed about her from her episodes that I think make her the best companion ever:

1: She came up with the capture plan in "The Time Warrior"
2: She figured out who was behind the dinosaurs in "Invasion of the dinosaurs"
3: She was nice to the retarded Tommy ["Planet of the spiders"]
4: She felt sorry for the big robot ["Robot"]
5: She crawled through the conduit and saved everyone ["Ark in space"]
6: She organised the escape plot in "Genesis of the daleks" [although she did get a lot of people killed]
7: She managed to shoot the blasting gelignite on the big pyramid, ["Pyramids of mars"]

8: She didn’t drink the wine Solon gave her because she knew it was drugged ["Brain of Morbius"]
9: She knew Eldrad couldn’t be trusted even though the Doctor said everything was fine. ["The Hand Of Fear"]
10: She can make some of the most ridiculous outfits look amazing
11: She adopted the archetype. ["Invasion of the bane"]

And if that’s not enough here’s one more thing: she’s kept going. Yes the doctor left, and yes she was heartbroken, but she kept on going - and look at her now. She’s still investigating and she’s doing better than ever! She was right in "Invasion of the bane"; she’s changed, and so has the Doctor... yet she’s still that same plucky young journalist we saw in "The Time Warrior" and she’s still as amazing as ever.

My Favourites from the weekend.

Favourite Adventures:

5: The Time Warrior
4: Pyramids of mars
3: The Hand of fear
2: School reunion
1: Invasion of the Bane

Favourite Moment:
5: Sarah gets stuck in the Smarties tube [Pyramids of Mars]
4: Sarah gets stuck in the conduit, [The Ark in space] she does get stuck in things a lot doesn’t she?
3: Sarah climbing the scaffolding and falling off, [Genesis of the daleks]
2: Sarah and Rose bitch fighting and then laughing about the Doctor [School reunion]
1: Sarah driving a bus through a wall, [Invasion of the bane],

Favourite Outfit:
5: White Victorian dress [Pyramids of mars]
4: Funky Jumper and shorts [Genesis of the daleks]
3: Brown Suit [The Time Warrior],
2: Stripy Dress and Cardigan [Invasion of the bane]
1: Andy Pandy Overalls [The Hand of fear],

Favourite Line:
5: "Nonsense Brigadier, you're a swinger!” [Robot]
4: "My Ankles aren’t thick!" [Revenge of the cybermen]
3: "Mrs Wormwood, I’d rather die", [Invasion of the Bane]
2: “Eldrad must live! [The Hand of fear]
1: “Life on Earth can be an adventure too; you just need to know where to look”. [Invasion of the Bane].

Favourite K9 Moment:
5: K9 Trying to sing [K9 and company]
4: K9 and Brendan talking computer speak [K9 and company]
3: K9 doesn’t understand Gnomes, “Garden Goblin not in my memory” [K9 and Company]
2: K9 in the black hole [Invasion of the Bane],
1: K9 sacrificing himself, “You bad dog”, “Affirmative!” [School Reunion]

Worst Adventures:
5: Death to the Daleks - this episode is so slow and she's such a whimpering idiot in this one; the only good bit in it is when we see her in a bikini at the start.
4: Terror of the Zygons - didn’t like this one, it was confusing and a bit slow.
3: The Planet of Evil - slow and a bit boring, but I do like her outfit.
2: Monster of Peladon - there’s no reason for this serial to be a six parter, it goes on for way too long.
1: The Five Doctors - I don’t get it, this guy Rassilon is kidnapping the doctor and his companions to turn them into action figures??!

It certainly sounds like Brandon had a real experience watching the episodes. She watched over 2000 minutes of television in one sitting (rather her than me!) and whereas some might think she's a little nutty for doing so, Sarah-Jane.TV loves the fact that she's so dedicated to the cause.

In recognition of her achievement I bestow the title of "Affirmative, Brandon" upon her! That's it for now true believers - don't forget to email me if you ever have anything interesting to post for other Smithies across the globe to read and enjoy!

The Marathon Weekend

As the wait for the full Sarah Jane series begins, one fan (or "Smithie") over at Outpost Gallifrey has found the perfect way to occupy their time; this very weekend they're having a Sarah Jane marathon - where they'll watch every adventure that Sarah Jane Smith has had on television, from "The Time Warrior" all the way through to "Invasion of the Bane". That's a solid 2000 minutes of screen time!

We wish the viewer, who has the perfect user name "Sarah Jane Smith", the best of luck in their mission. You can read all about the marathon here. And if "SJS" is reading, feel free to share your marathon experience with SJ.TV here.

Now, over the past couple of weeks a number of Sarah Jane related articles have hit news stands across the UK. As previously reported (by fellow reporter peter-pan) this month's "Cult Times" magazine features a Susie Liggit interview - as well as a Sarah-tastic front cover, which you can see above. Cult Times #135 is out now; priced £3.99.

Elsewhere, issue 346 of Starburst Magazine features a cool Colin Teague interview, where the man discusses his work on both Sarah Jane and Torchwood. He then looks ahead to the future to talk a little (!) about his upcoming work on Doctor Who's third season finale. The man is absolutely chuffed at being the first director to woirk on all three "Whoniverse" shows - and is no doubt awaiting the day he shoots "K9 Adventures"*

Also from visimag comes the 211th issue of TV Zone - featuring an interview with the top talent, Elisabeth Sladen. There's also a look ahead to the forthcoming shows of 2007 - which includes the likes of Shameless, Jekyll and the final Life on Mars. You can pick the magazine up for a respectable £3.99.

Finally, the next issue of SFX Magazine is due for release next week, and features some nifty k9 badges (along with Captain Jack Harkness ones too!). There may - or maynot - be a review of The Sarah Jane Adventures inside - but whether there is or not, one thing's for sure, the magazine will be a damn good read (and free badges; who am I to complain?!?).

It's been a pleasure folks. 'Till next time...

*Relax - we wouldn't really put Colin through that torture...

Slow News Is No News

Over the past week or so I've hit something of a dilemma; in that there's been absolutely no news regarding "The Sarah Jane Adventures" or "K9 Adventures" to report. It seems that the BBC are keeping mum on the series proper until filming starts in Mid-April.

Which leaves me with a huge problem: just what do I talk about here on SJA.TV? This is, primarily, a news and resource site for the series - only it's hard to run a news site when there's no news to actually report. So please, bare with us over the next couple of weeks if news is a little thin on the ground. Honestly, it's not our fault!

Moving swiftly on, I 've got great news for anybody who's contacted me regarding screencaps of "Invasion of the Bane". Over at OutpostGallifrey, TaraLivesOn has kindly posted some neat images for us all to enjoy (go Tara!) and it's my great honour to share them with you now. So, click here for all that screencap madness (or else I'll send K9 round...).

Elsewhere the online fanzine Shockeye's Kitchen has posted a detailed review (mostly positive) of the New Year's Day episode. You can read the full report by clicking here. Don't be afraid of old Shockeye - as the Sixth Doctor learnt back in "The Two Doctors" the most he'll do is eat you!

Finally, tomorrow will see a neat little post; a collection of tibits (or little known facts) about SJA from the pages of DWM. Like for instance, did you know... No, you'll have to wait! Besides, tomorrow's not that far away. Is it?

Thanks for sticking with the site guys and gals, and I can promise some neat things to come, once the production is up and running. I hope you'll be back Smithies - because for Sarah Jane Smith and a small band of friends, there's a whole world of adventure to be discovered.

And news too, if the BBC ever get round to releasing any...

Doing It For The Kids

As reported over at Torchwood.TV the latest issue of DWM (or Doctor Who Magazine to you and me) has hit news-stands everywhere, and features a mammoth behind the scenes feature on "The Runaway Bride" as well as the Torchwood finale - and the Sarah Jane Adventures pilot too!

The magazine goes behind the scenes on the development of "Invasion of the Bane" and reveals that the episode went from first draft script to filming in an agonising five weeks (normally, it's anywhere between two and three months). Gareth Roberts and Russell T Davies are amongst those who are interviewed about their involement with the series - as is, naturally, Sarah Jane Smith herself, alias Elisabeth Sladen!

Sladen's given a full page interview, where she reveals - amongst others - that BBC Head of Fiction, Jane Tranter, absolutely loves the series (join the club!). Sladen also talks about how she was approached to star in the series (yes, it's time to roll out that "I thought it was gonna be Torchwood!" story all over again...) and how much she's enjoyed appearing in the series so far. Oh, and it's a relief to know that the children actors on Sarah Jane (as DWM so lovingly calls it) don't exhaust Sladen one bit - "I absolutely adore them."

Elsewhere, in Gallifrey Guardiam's news section, it's revealed exactly who will be writing the series proper of SJA - set to hit our screens later in the year. Russell T Davies is down to write one of the two part adventures (work commitments permitting); whereas his co-creator, Gareth Roberts, will be scripting two complete stories (so, four episodes in total).

Another writer, Phil Ford, is set to pen one two-part adventure. Ford has recently written for the new CGI Captain Scarlet series, and for the dramas "Bad Girls", "Footballer's Wives" and the twice weekly soap, "The Bill". The writer of the series' last two-part adventure has yet to be revealled.

Finally, DWM confirms what Sarah-Jane.TV has known for a while now; filming on the series begins around mid April, for transmission on BBC One later in the year.

Doctor Who Magazine issue 378 is out now, priced £3.99. To read about the magazine's Torchwood coverage, click here.

Laughing At Krynoids

Seen as though we've now got an agonising wait until the series proper of "The Sarah Jane Adventures" hits our screens, I thought now would be an ideal time to show you guys an interview that DigitalSpy conducted with Elisabeth Sladen last week:

Can you tell us about the basic premise of the Sarah Jane Adventures?

"Well, Sarah Jane is on her own, without the Doctor. At the end of 'School Reunion', it was a very 'up' ending, which Russell decided on instead of a sad ending - we had two choices, because it's so easy to do a sad ending, they went for the other one. They thought there was life in Sarah Jane and her wee doggie. As far as 'School Reunion' was concerned, that Sarah Jane was a bit without steam, because there she meets the Doctor again and whoa, right round the corner is Rose, so you can't keep the same things you always did. It started off to be a very weak situation for her, and it kind of got stronger, with the Doctor saying 'you go, you don't need anyone around' and having left her K9, saying 'you can live the life you've always enjoyed without feeling that I've got to be around you all the time'. That's where Sarah Jane can walk the walk again on 'School Reunion'. Does that make sense? It makes perfect sense to me!"

It makes perfect sense!

"It's like when you lose someone close to you, it's like - you mustn't let that ruin your life, because that's negating all you had with them."

Can you give us teasers about what will happen in the New Year's Day special?

"Well, Sarah has her house - going back to my very first episode, she had some money, an inheritance, she had this house. This new family move in opposite, this girl Maria wants to be friendly. Sarah doesn't do kids. I mean, how many people could you share what has happened to you with - you've gone round time and space with this guy with two hearts, you'd be locked away! No coffee mornings for Sarah. Maria just wants to be friendly, and one evening she sees something in Sarah's garden that she shouldn't, and becomes quite inquisitive. Sarah's following up a story that she can actually see where Maria's going and gain access and information. They sort of both have a tie up but then they get in each others' way, and basically kids are very inquisitve, and this kid won't give up. It is a problem for Sarah, because you can't be looking after everyone else as well as yourself. She's not been used to that. But, you know, it's a great learning curve for her. We've got some lovely gadgets. One is very camp, one is very amazing, and the other one's quite fun. I hope audiences will like that."

Would you say that now Sarah Jane is the main character in the show, like the Doctor, and the kids are her companions, almost?

"You always have to have a leader. She's not trying to be the Doctor, in any shape or form, she's literally doing as she always did when he was around. The kids are like companions, but it's kind of different, because with a companion you're taking that companion out of their own surroundings and so they're more reliant on the Doctor and his knowledge. Sarah has knowledge, and we do have monsters, aliens. Although she has the knowledge of that, the kids are very 'street cred', so it's more of a swap-over of different lifestyles."

If Torchwood is an adult show, and Doctor Who is a family show, would it be fair to say the Sarah Jane Adventures is aimed solely at kids or is there something in it for everyone?

"That'll be up to the audience and what they see [in it]. I suppose when Doctor Who was on, it would have been called a kids' programme. I get letters now from 6-year-olds and 60-year-olds, it's quite bizarre. I don't know where Sarah Jane will go. It's pretty obvious that they're going to put it on CBBC, where Russell is aiming for. It's up to an audience. I do know certain dads who will be watching, and I hope I don't disappoint them, you know? I don't know, doing the script, playing the scene, and we're all doing what is written there. Where it's scheduled we'll have to see. I imagine, if it's on CBBC, I don't know the exact slot, I mean, that's what they're going for."

When are you filming the main series of the Sarah Jane Adventures?

"We've done the pilot and we start filming again in mid-April."

Do you have high hopes that the show will go on for a few years?

"I haven't actually thought past it...I think it would be lovely, because it's got life in it and I think there's Russell, and Gareth, the writer, has also written with Russell. He has the definitive stamp on it. From doing the special, I can't wait to see the other scripts and where it will take us, because, you know, those things which he's had to work against, almost, in the special, we can take on board. We're going to be joined as friends. So we'll see what direction...the special is indicative of what may come. The special's a learning curve for everyone."

Russell T Davies is well known for planning out plot and character arcs well in advance. He could well have something thought out long-term for Sarah Jane!

"You'd have to ask him that! I truly don't know what his agenda is."

Russell has added a more emotional element to the Doctor this time round, helping him find love. Will Sarah Jane find anyone?

"Well, I think for a new generation that's quite right, because it tends to be accepted by this modern generation. I've no idea, I truly haven't. I didn't really know what was in the special. We spoke about Sarah's character, chatted about it, and it was up to him where it went. He knows the character...he even wrote for my weird speech patterns, it's quite bizarre! I opened the script and one of the things that I thought was 'my god, I never thought of that, how lovely!' The second scene I thought 'how amazing' and the third scene 'I never thought that could happen'. So in a script with a character I thought I'd known for thirty years, he's already done three things I never even thought of! We'll see what lies ahead, I truly don't know."

The Sarah Jane Adventures is still set in the same universe as Doctor Who, so is there any chance of any familiar foes popping up?

"Wouldn't that be nice? We've got a new alien in the first one. I'd quite like to see someone from the past. It's got life in it."

If you could pick any monsters from Sarah Jane's past to meet again, who would they be?

"Well, I suppose when I was working on the programme with Tom and John, I thought Davros was brilliant. I loved the Davros character. And of course the Daleks. And also the Sontarans, which was my very first one."

You appeared again with the Sontaran experiment, didn't you?

"Yes, yes! Those are the only two that come to mind at the moment, they're the two I remember, the ones I thought worked best."

I always liked the Krynoids.

"Ooh, you liked that one? I liked the story, but when I saw the tree walking along, I just [laughed]. I used to love six-parters rather than fourt-parters. Four-parters are much tighter, but a six-parter, you get to know the company."

That was strange, because it felt almost like a two-parter, doing stuff in the Antarctic that could have been done elsewhere.

"They might have just thought...I think that there was something...someone spoke about it on the technical side, that they were going to do one and then they pushed two together to make a six-parter. But again, technically, I don't have the relevant details for that. Lovely Dougie Camfield was the director on that. He spoke about it once."

You mentioned your love for six-parters, but now they seem totally different in terms of the pacing to the TV you see nowadays with quick editing, quick cuts and much faster filming. How does the filming compare?

"Well, I suppose Russell would call the Tom and John days the 'classic' Doctor Who. I had to go and look at them again, because Tom and I voiced them for the DVDs. Some of them, you think, oh dear, but I actually saw, with David Maloney, who sadly has only just died - I was so pleased he was able to do this, we re-voiced 'Genesis of the Daleks', and I thought that was absolutely amazing. I thought the lighting, the editing, I mean, you have to think of the budget we had. We're not just talking about how different it was because it was 1976, you're talking also how different it was by comparison with what money you could put on the screen and what was available technically at the time. I just really thought 'Genesis of the Daleks' was absolutely superb. I was well pleased with that! As far as filming's concerned - we used to do studio work when we were filming, but now you do 'rehearse record', it's not curtain up at 7:30...it's a totally different animal that you have to accommodate putting on the screen, way of doing it."

How difficult was it for you to pick up the character of Sarah Jane after so long not appearing on screen?

"It was quite tough, I suppose. I don't get stacks of mail, but as soon as I left, it never stopped. The videos came out, which, when I left, I thought 'right, that's the end of Sarah Jane, I enjoyed it but that's it'. But because of the videos, I would get letters, and people would ask 'where would Sarah be now, if she was still working the way she had been with the Doctor?' Although it's not my life and I don't think of it every morning when I get up, it's always at the forefront of your brain, because you're always answering the questions about her now, as well as her as she was. It wasn't that big a leap mentally, to take on board the scripts at all. It's actually where I thought she'd be. It's a very realistic emotional point."

This isn't the first time Sarah Jane has had a spin-off, of course. Do you ever wonder what might have happened had K9 and Company been given a full series?

"Well, I think the dog would have needed some major work. I'd never met the dog before on Doctor Who, it wasn't my time. I just bumped into it the first day of filming, and I couldn't believe this thing was operated by a little 'stop and go', and wagged its tail on a box, with a little feller following it round. It would have had to have been totally revamped to make it work. It was a learning curve, that, for me. It was a totally different thing to what we have now, or if we had that dog now, you see. It would have to really do what was in the script."

A lot of people have wondered why it never did go to a full series, since it had very good viewing figures...

"It was John Nathan Turner's baby, and to be honest, a lot of things did go wrong. I don't know what else he was working on at the time, but I went straight into work from it, so I was just doing it for the money. There's a certain area where I had to check responsibility. I just did it, because there's no time to say 'I don't think that works' because there was no alternative. As far as the viewing figures, we lost half the viewing figures because of all the blackouts that night with weather or something. The stations went down. Also, how true this is I don't know, I was told that the 'powers that be' at the BBC had commissioned a series, but they changed, someone else came in and said that they didn't want it. So, there was really not much bargaining with it at all. People do seem to adore the dog."

Do you find it funny that people associate you with K9 despite you never having appeared in an episode of Doctor Who with him? Their memories are slightly skewed!

"I know, I know! It's as though I've been with it all the time. I don't know how it happened, but the public just adore this dog. It's really bizarre and I truly don't know."

When you're out and about doing the shopping, do you ever have any kids start staring at you?

"Well, more so now, I think. Occasionally hoodies will come up and I think 'am I going to be mugged'. At Charing Cross Station the other week, I was just sitting there with my coffee waiting for a connection, and this guy didn't stop walking, he just came up and said 'god bless you, Sarah', and walked off! It's sort of non-intrusive and I'm sure it's not what the doctors get at all, but it's always very sweet, I like it."

A massive thanks to the entire DigitalSpy team for putting together the interview. Check out their site once in a while, as it usual features some cool Doctor Who-related goodness!

The Ratings Are In...

Yesterday's debut screening of "Invasion of the Bane" secured a (rather average) rating of 2.9 Million viewers - enough for the programme to be beaten in the ratings by the 2175th showing of Dick Van Dyke's "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang". So, not entirely the best possivble news is it?

To make it worse, it looks like of that 2.9 Million, only 0.4 Million of them were children watching. Of course, overnigh figures are never exactly accurate - and don't represent every single home within the UK. But, from the sounds of things, it looks like The Sarah Jane Adventures isn't nessecarily "children's television"...

In other news, I'm hearing rumblings that "Invasion of the Bane" is set for a Saturday evening / Sunday afternoon repeat on the CBBC Channel some time in January. We'll post more on this apparent news story as soon as we learn more.

To reassure readers, the sries proper of "The Sarah Jane Adventures" is scheduled to begin filming mid-way through April (which would suggest that the series is set to air around June/July - or if the beeb want to, it could very well be held back until the Autumn schedules in September). The scripts are no doubt being written right now - so as soon as information is released, Sarah-Jane.TV will be straight on the case!

Finally on the news front, as we enter 2007 there's still no news on the latest K9 series, "K9 Adventures". Sources have suggested that the series is likely never to be made, and will fall through during pre-production. This can only be good news for "The Sarah Jane Adventures" - where K9 is currently locked away inside a safe (apparently in deep space) attempting to close a black hole. Altogether now... "Poor K9!" We, as viewers, want the metal mute back just as much as Sarah Jane does.

Now, just like in October when Torchwood debuted, I feel immensely proud to be associated with such a fantastic new series. Yesterday, I was literally on the edge of my seat throughout "Invasion of the Bane" - and I'm not even part of the demographic for the series! Honestly, Sarah Jane didn't let me down one bit, and I can't wait until the new series debuts later in the year.

It's going to be a blast - and I'm really going to enjoy taking you faithful readers along for the ride...

Folks, The Bane Are Coming...

At last, after a wait that seems to have laster forever, New Years Day is upon us - which means one thing; it's time to roll out the party poppers and paper hats as "The Sarah Jane Adventures" debuts on BBC One.

Effectively a pilot episode for an entire 10 part series set to follow later in the year, the special (titled "Invasion of the Bane" don't you know) sees Sarah Jane Smith, older and wiser following "School Reunion", meet 13 year old Maria. The pair team together to investigate the mysterious Bubbleshock drink that's taken the whole of Britain by storm. Without the Doctor around, and k9 away on a mission for the Time Lord, it's up to Sarah Jane and her new friends to save the day...

The special airs at 4:50pm on BBC One - be there or be square. After you've watched it, why not head over to its handy brand spanking new episode guide and leave your thoughts and reactions?

Alternatively, you can sign up to Sarah-Jane.TV's new forum, and talk to Smithies across the world. Be warned though, it's surprisingly addictive, and likely to turn even the most lightweight television viewer into a hardcore Smithie!

Enjoy the show folks, and I'll see you all very soon; when we'll turn our attention to the 10 part series that's set to follow later this year.
